 In the fall of 2009 Partners in Prevention administered the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance (YRBS) tool in six Rock County school districts; Beloit, Beloit Turner, Clinton, Edgerton, Evansville and Milton. Janesville School District will participate this May. The YRBS replaces the Search Institute Attitudes and Behavior survey previously used by Partners. The YRBS is a free on-line survey used by the State of Wisconsin and results are included in the national school-based survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

 New studies from the American Medical Association report that the human brain doesn’t fully develop until age 25. This research reveals that alcohol use during teenage years can have a permanent impact on the way teens learn and succeed in school. Alcohol use during teen years can slow or halt the growth of the sections of the brain that control learning and memory. The earlier a teen starts drinking, the more damaging and lasting the effects of alcohol can have on the brain.

 147 people responded to the Partners in Prevention invitation to complete an online survey on adult perceptions of underage drinking. Of those who provided comments, many felt that the drinking age should be lowered to 18; some felt that it’s the parent’s right to decide whether to allow underage drinking; and some people commented that they support prevention efforts to reduce underage drinking.

 Edgerton High School held its first Reality Maze on Nov. 24, 2009. A Reality Maze is designed to "bring to life" the potential effects of choices stemming from underage drinking, drug use and tobacco use. Teens navigate through the life-size game board by following scenarios indicating their choices and discovering the consequences each option brings them. While teens have control over the choices they make, they do not always have control over the consequences of their choices.

Mark is the CESA #2 ATODA (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs of Abuse) Coordinator; serving 74 school districts in south central and south eastern Wisconsin. The Parents Who Host, Lose The Most: Don’t be a party to teenage drinking public awareness campaign was developed by Ohio’s Drug-Free Action Alliance in 2000. This initiative was created in response to a 1998 assessment that identified teen house parties as a challenge to enforcement of local laws. Some parents host teen alcohol parties either to be “cool” with their children or in an attempt to keep their kids from drinking and driving. The campaign objectives are to educate parents about the health and safety risks of serving alcohol at teen house parties and to increase awareness of and compliance with local underage drinking laws.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office has stepped up its efforts to bust drinking parties in recent years. Sgt. Jason Harding is in charge of the effort, overseeing increased patrols on nights of prom, graduations, homecomings and the like.

In June ’08, ECHC obtained almost 100 signatures on a petition in support of a fenced in beer garden during the Tobacco Heritage Days festival. Members of ECHC attended the City Council meeting and presented the signatures and read emails in support of the fence.
